Artist Talk with ceramicist
Visitors were invited to listen to Paul Briggs discuss his practice and process, including his work Whorl on view in the exhibition Craft Across Continents at Mint Museum Uptown.
Briggs employs a unique pinching technique to extract natural leaf-like forms from classic ceramic vessels, resulting in work characterized by balance and precision. His guiding principle, “Nature makes no aesthetic mistakes,” underscores his endeavor to defy convention and constraints. Among his notable pieces, The Impact of Incarceration on Black Lives, features 25 ceramic black boxes, scaled to jail cell dimensions, with twisted, coiled bars protruding.

This exhibition will accompanied by an innovative catalogue with entries on Japanese ceramics and bamboo sculptures by world-renowned expert Joe Earle, as well as entries on Western objects by Annie Carlano, senior curator of Craft, Design and Fashion; and Rebecca Elliot, assistant curator of Craft, Design and Fashion; plus contributions by renowned artists Sharif Bey and Nancy Callan.
