HBCUs have long been critical incubators for artistic talent in the South. Many of their art departments were founded and led by the region’s leading artists during the early 20th century and period covered in the exhibition Southern/Modern.
Enjoy free museum admission and a day of art, live music, and a panel discussion about the importance and impact of HBCU programs and the arts.
11 AM-2 PM
Shop with HBCU vendors on the Mezzanine Level and the Mint Museum Store, and visit the exhibition Southern/Modern.
1-2 PM
Live music by Sign of the Times of the Carolinas band featuring vocalist Toni Tupponce in the Morrison Atrium.
2–3:30 PM
Panel discussion in Morrison Atrium featuring:
Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, PhD, an advocate for legislative HBCU funding.
Leo Twiggs, PhD, renowned artist and Claflin University graduate.
Shawnya Harris, PhD, curator of African American art at the Georgia Museum of Art.
Danille Taylor, PhD, professor and Director of the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum.
Moderated by Rubie R. Britt-Height, director of community engagement and partnerships at WFAE.
HBCU alumni and current students are encouraged to wear their school colors or D9 Greek sorority and fraternity colors.
