About

Andrew Leventis is a Charlotte-based oil painter and an assistant professor of painting at UNC Charlotte.

He earned a bachelor’s of fine art in painting from the American Academy of Art in Chicago and an master’s degree in fine art from Goldsmiths College, University of London. His work has been featured in Norway at Kunstgalleriet, in London at Matt Roberts Arts, and in Rome at The Venanzo Crocetti Museum.

Over the last two decadesLeventis has explored the value of objects through still-life oil paintings. With his Refrigerator series, Leventis refers directly to the global pandemic, specifically the food hoarding and shortages of spring 2020. He says, “The paintings reflect on the mass panic induced by the Covid-19 virus, and how the idea of “stocking up” became a crucial and even primal response in a notion to survive.”

When he paints images of the contents of industrial freezers, friends’ refrigerators, selected film stills, or museum installations, the value judgment is shared between artist and source. Like a scholar highlighting a passage in a book, Leventis calls our attention to what otherwise might be overlooked, forcing us to think critically about excess, opulence, feminine and masculine spaces, and consumer culture.

The paintings reflect on the mass panic induced by the Covid-19 virus, and how the idea of ‘stocking up’ became a crucial and even primal response in a notion to survive.

Constellation CLT is designed to connect visitors of The Mint Museum with the universe of talent in the local community.

Now in its fourth year, Constellation CLT is an exhibition series designed to connect visitors to The Mint Museum with artists in our community, as well as activate the public spaces of the museum. The installations rotate three times per year and can be seen in five places at Mint Museum Uptown: at the foot of the atrium escalator; on the landings of the Mezzanine and 3rd levels; and in the Museum Store.
