Join us for hands-on art activities, tours of Southern/Modern, jazz and gospel performances, and an artist response installation. Join Senior Curator of American Art Jonathan Stuhlman, PhD, for a *talk and facilitated discussion about the historical context presented in the work Southern Souvenir No. II by artist Eldzier Cortor.

*Discussion of Southern/Modern and Eldzier Cortor’s painting Southern Souvenir No. II with Jonathan Stuhlman, PhD, senior curator of American Art, followed by a discussion about works created in response to Southern Souvenir No. II with Rubie Britt-Height and featured artists Nellie Ashford, Princess Cureton, John Miles, Georgie Nakima, Jaznae Norman, and Brenda Pinkston.

Art-making activities led by Dena Jones, local artist and art manager at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Southern/Modern slow-looking conversation with Joel Smeltzer, head of school and gallery programs, exploring *Southern Souvenir No. II , as well as works by Lois Mailou Jones and Elizabeth Catlett.

Let’s Talk About It: How to Offer Help and Hope, a discussion of strategies for self-care, how to prevent abuse, and how to support victims of domestic violence and human trafficking led by professional counselors.
4–5 PM | Morrison Atrium
Performance by multitalented vocalist, actor, and poet Quentin “Q” Talley.
*Please note, these programs include mature content that explores issues of historical violence against Black women.
