The Ceramic Series tour of Classic Black: The Basalt Sculpture of Wedgwood and His Contemporaries
February 18 @ 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Brian Gallagher will lead Delhom Service League members on a tour of the Mint’s new exhibition Classic Black: The Basalt Sculpture of Wedgwood and His Contemporaries. Gallagher organized the exhibition that opens at Mint Museum Randolph on February 8, 2020.
Classic Black explores a fascinating chapter in the history of ceramics, when Josiah Wedgwood and other Staffordshire potters created statues, busts, and other well-crafted, ornamental wares for the neoclassical interiors so popular among style-conscious consumers in the last few decades of eighteenth-century England and beyond. The exhibition catalogue was fully funded by the Delhom Service League and an anonymous patron.
Brian Gallagher is the Curator of Decorative Arts at The Mint Museum, and the staff liaison for Delhom Service League. His recent projects include the publication, British Ceramics 1675–1825: The Mint Museum, which highlights over 225 examples from the Mint’s renowned British ceramics collection, and the reinstallation of that collection in a long-term display called Portals to the Past: British Ceramics 1675-1825. Prior to joining the Mint staff, Brian was an assistant curator in the European Art Department at the Detroit Instituteof Arts. He holds a M.S. in Library and Information Science from Drexel University, Philadelphia, and a M.A. and a M. Phil. from the Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture, New York.
