CANCELED: Coveted Couture Gala: Black & Light

April 25 @ 6:00 PM

The Mint Museum’s Coveted Couture Gala: A Special Evening of Black & Light Canceled

As news around the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to unfold, The Mint Museum is committed to ensuring the safety of our community by helping to slow the spread of the coronavirus. With that in mind, and in consultation with Gala chairs Ann and Michael Tarwater and presenting sponsor Wells Fargo Private Bank, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Mint’s Coveted Couture Gala: An Evening of Black and Light, scheduled for April 25.

We depend greatly on the revenue our gala generates to meet our annual budget goals. Wells Fargo Private Bank, the presenting sponsor of the gala, is generously honoring its $75,000 commitment during these trying times, and some guests and table sponsors already agreed to transfer their gala support into a contribution to the museum.

If you, too, had already bought a ticket — or if you’d planned to — we hope you will consider transferring your gala ticket(s) to a fully tax-deductible annual fund contribution. While we realize the act of giving is more enjoyable when done together in celebration, your support remains crucial during these times of economic instability. Your contribution will enable the museum to continue delivering on its mission to the community, including our commitment to paying our full-time and part-time staff while we are closed. Maintaining your gala commitment—along with your participation in our upcoming virtual paddle raise (more to come)—is vital. Your support will also help us defray the expenses that we have already incurred and be as supportive as we can of the local vendors we rely on to make this such a special night.

It’s no secret that even before the coronavirus pandemic, the Mint was already grappling with some difficult financial realities. When the community voted against the sales tax referendum that would have provided stable annual funding to the arts, we knew we were facing a significant decrease in funding from the Arts & Science Council for the next fiscal year.

And yet, we know that the greater Charlotte region needs this institution, North Carolina’s first art museum. This is our community. And our community relies on us to provide arts education to children whose school art programs are being cut, like we do with school tours and Sunday Fun Days. They depend on us to help inspire youth in one of Charlotte’s most marginalized neighborhoods to build self-esteem, develop leadership skills, and make wise life choices—like we do every week with our Grier Heights Community Youth Art Program. And they rely on our galleries and exhibitions to stir the hearts and minds of everyone who encounters them, reminding us all that creativity, beauty and the power of fresh perspectives make our world a better place.

Looking forward, we are planning now to be a significant part of Charlotte’s “reawakening” with free access for all the first weekend we are open. We plan to fill those days with celebratory programming and inspiring art in our beautiful, calming spaces.

Thank you again for your support of the Mint during these challenging times.

Sincerely,

Todd Herman, President and CEO
