Wednesday Night Live: Poetry by Jay Ward

Charlotte Poet Laureate Jay Ward, is joined by award-winning poets Angelo Geter and Shane Manier, for a night of spoken word poem performances in response to select works in the Coined in the South: 2022 exhbition at Mint Museum Uptown, plus free admission and a cash bar.

A bit about the poets:

Jay Ward was named Charlotte Poet Laureate in April 2022. Ward is a poet and teaching artist from Charlotte, a NationSlam champion, an Individual World Poetry Slam champion, and the author of “Sing Me A Lesser Wound” and “Composition.” Ward facilitates writing and performance workshops, and coaches youth poets attending Brave New Voices each year. He serves as vice-chair for the board of The Watering Hole, a non-profit organization that aims to nurture writers of color in the Southern tradition.

 

Angelo Geter is a poet and performance artist also known in the spoken word world as “EyeAmBic.” A Winthrop University graduate, Geter was named Rock Hill Poet Laureate in 2020, is a National Poetry Slam champion, Rustbelt Regional Poetry Slam finalist, Southern Fried Regional Poetry Slam finalist, and a 2019 All-America City winner. He has performed at venues and competitions across the country.

 

 

Shane Manier is creative coach, poetry mentor and national spoken word poet based in Charlotte. She is the founder of The National Poetry Month Summit and the founder of Guerilla Poets, a nonprofit art collective with branches in the U.S. and United Kingdom. She is currently the Spoken Word and Arts Teaching Instructor for The Harvey B. Gantt Center, Henderson High School, and Playing for Others, as well as Center for Faith in the Arts Visual Artist in Residence.

 

Presented by Bank of America, Wednesday Night Live includes free admission to The Mint Museum, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture 5-9 p.m. every Wednesday, as well as live entertainment or programming at one of the four Levine Center for the Arts institutions each week. Special programming includes everything from Brazilian dance performances to spoken-word artists to film screenings.
