Davidson Day School 9th-12th grade photography students are exhibiting works inspired by the exhibition Bearing Witness: The New York Photo League and Sonia Handelman Meyer.Reflecting on the experience, 9th grade student Isabelle Blair observed: “One photograph…stood out to me…”Girl on a Swing.” This girl lived during the Great Depression and most likely faced great hardships. Yet here she is, swinging so high above the ground…. She is fearless and free of the troubles surrounding her. This photograph has inspired me to put more meaning, hidden or obvious, behind my photographs.” Working with their photography teacher and photojournalist Laura Mueller (former photographer & photo editor at The Charlotte Observer), students documented Davidson’s Main Street in a style inspired by the exhibition’s photographs.
